A Study of the Feasibility of Offering a Postdoctoral Professional Master’s Degree
Participants: Caltech Postdoctoral Fellows and recent Caltech PhDs.
Background
There are approximately 89,000 postdoctoral fellows working in the U.S. today. Roughly half of them will pursue careers in industry. While some take time out to return to fulltime graduate programs in business—typically a two-year MBA, or in Law (3 years), many go to work without any formal business preparation.
In response to an ongoing interest expressed by postdoctoral fellows, Keck Graduate Institute is studying the possibility of creating a new degree for postdoctoral fellows—a Postdoctoral Professional Master’s. This degree will be focused on preparing individuals who had completed the PhD in a life science or engineering program and who are interested in a career in the life sciences industry.
KGI administrators have met with Caltech President Chameau and have also talked with Vice Provost Mayo, other faculty and professional staff at Caltech, as well as leadership of AAAS, the Association of Postdoctoral and industry executives. All believe the concept has merit.
The purpose of the Postdoctoral Professional Masters Focus Group(s) at Caltech is to learn directly from prospective enrollees what they would like to see offered.
